Summary
In these texts, a bodhisattva is a person who has intuitively recognised the truth of Buddhism and is on the way to its final attainment. A word-by-word reading of the Heart Sutra renders the word as one whose essence is perfect wisdom; the sutra's bodhisattva is Avalokitesvara. The sixteen precepts are known as the bodhisattva precepts.
