Summary
A sesshin, in Mike's words, is a concentrated few days to live in a quiet, settled way, not being disturbed by ideas. The word retreat does not really describe it: it is not a retreat from the world into a peaceful hideaway but hard work, a kind of training in self-management, and the peace we find there is a kind of truce between warring factions. It is a strange kind of holiday in the sense that it is formal: we agree to sit without moving, and in restraining ourselves we notice ourselves. We come away from society because, immersed in it, we cannot see what is going on.
