Summary
Before we come, we easily build up a picture of a retreat: a wonderful weekend, a peaceful hideaway, eternal peace, or a special state we will get at the end. Mike says that if it is like what you expect, that is not it. A euphoric state after a sesshin is not the Buddhist state; the normal state when we leave is quite peaceful, perhaps a little frightened to see the world again. Hoping that sesshin will make us peaceful and happy quicker is a way of always searching for something.
