Yoko on Sawaki — Yoko reads Kodo Sawaki’s zazen as fully becoming yourself, not as something gained
Yoko reads her own English translation of Master Kodo Sawaki’s talks and treats zazen as fully becoming yourself, not as a special state you get from it. Where people ask what they can get, she reads his answers “you can get nothing” and “you can become natural”, against the idea that lighting a candle brings satori at once or that satori is the same as intellect. She keeps Master Dogen’s words that shikantaza is not an idea but the fact of just sitting, and that the state of sitting is satori itself, not something that must come before practice or after it.
