Summary
Mike says that when Master Dogen talks about dropping off body and mind we can include in that dropping off all the tensions in our body: in normal life our muscles get a lot of stick from driving or using the computer, habits are ingrained in them and we do not notice them, and when we sit in zazen they slowly drop off tension. What Dogen calls dropping off body, Mike says, means releasing the physical stress in our muscles; he sees it when people sit, because after fifteen or twenty minutes their muscles relax, although it may take months or years for the habits ingrained in the muscles to drop away.
