Summary
Mike says that his teacher Nishijima used to insist that sitting in zazen is sitting in the balanced state, and Mike describes it as not leaning backwards or forwards, with the weight of the head balanced on the shoulders and the body balanced about the pelvis. Mike likes to say sitting in balance, the same balance as at the centre of sport, and because Buddhism says that body and mind are two sides of one whole, if we balance our body we balance our mind. Zazen is balance, and so balance without holding ourselves: the spine is like a pile of stones, one on top of the other, and once it is balanced no effort is needed. Mike says that because we are sitting in a balanced posture we get the benefit of that posture, and tells that the Buddha realised that his balanced posture of dhyāna was deeply connected with his simple realization about his life.
